More and more health care workers are developing this problem, many of whom were unaware they were at risk. Since the increase in glove use after theCenter for Disease Control's (CDC) recommendations regarding universal precautions in 1987, more health care workers are developing symptoms of latex allergy. No clear policies on glove use exist outside the CDC recommendations, and many health care workers wear gloves in situations where they may not be necessary, exposing themselves to unnecessary risk. There are several clinical questions that need to be answered. It is first necessary to determine the prevalence of the problem. It is then necessary to determine what health care workers can do to decrease the chances of developing the allergy and, finally, how to manage those who already have the allergy. This problem is very important to nursing.
